Rat Western prefers cats to dogs, takkies to high heels and critical art engagement to money. She likes money too, but if it's a question of preferences... This is why, despite a Masters degree in interactive media which could afford her a more lucrative position in the advertising industry, she works as a lecturer in Digital Arts at Rhodes University as well as a freelance journalist and designer for a variety of contemporary artists and art happenings. She is an artist whose practice focuses – through video, performance, netart and digitally manipulated photography – on the art of storytelling.

Western has received a number of awards for her artwork including The Martienssen Prize (2002), the HP Invision Digital Photographic Award (2003), and received second place in the Sasol New Signatures (2006) for her video work Untitled: NightWatch. She is a lecturer in digital art at the Rhodes University Department of Fine Art.
