Patricia Smith performs on 1990-Oct-15 at the Green Mill, Chicago. Together with cin salach and Marc Smith, she had just been selected as one of the first three poets selected to represent Chicago at the first-ever National Poetry Slam, to take place in San Francisco later that season. Together, the poets presented a featured reading, as the Green Mill Uptown Poetry slam selected its final team member.

The poem appears in Patricia Smith's first book, Life According to Motown (1991, Tia Chucha Press).
